VLM video annotation shortcuts: highest-accuracy configs can yield wrong conclusions, JHU study finds
krisgligoric · x · 2026-11-07
An AACL 2026 JHU paper systematically evaluates cost-saving heuristics (frame sampling, image grids, single modality) for VLM video annotation on sentiment/topic classification tasks. Key findings: accuracy and downstream validity can diverge — the highest-accuracy configuration can produce wrong conclusions; modality value isn't guaranteed, as text alone can perform strongly; and cost can be decoupled from video length — a single 2×8 image grid built via shot-transition detection approaches full-video understanding (κ within .05).
