METR report: Anthropic's model progress now ~2x faster, 80% of acceleration from its own AI

METR spent 11 weeks inside Anthropic's internal R&D data and interviews to turn recursive self-improvement from theory into measurement. Findings: model improvement is running at roughly 2x the 2024–2025 pace; 80% of the acceleration is attributed to Anthropic's own AI use, with faster compute growth ruled out; Anthropic's public August risk report understated actual progress; and METR sees no algorithm, compute, or data bottleneck likely to slow the loop within 12 months.
