Slop Index ranks Gemini 4 Argon 7th sloppiest of 58 models at AI-sounding writing
penguinothepenguin · reddit · 2026-11-07
The Slop Index benchmark scores 58 frontier models on short-form writing (emails, Slack, social posts, essays) for AI tells like padding, templating and flat rhythm, based on 112 scenarios and 64,636 generations against pre-ChatGPT human writing.
Key findings:
- Gemini 4 Argon ranks #7 sloppiest overall (#3 on social posts, #6 on email) — the worst Google model on the board
- Other Gemini models: 3.8 Flash #21, 3.7 Flash #25, 3.5 Flash #28, 3.6 Flash #34, 3.1 Pro #40
- The six sloppiest are Mistral Large, Seed 2.1 Turbo and four Anthropic models — sloppiness isn't Google-only
- Includes a crowd-voting arena; dataset is open on Hugging Face
Limitations: short-form only, and mechanical axes miss repeated sentence constructions. Built by a Slashy (email client) team member as an internal model-selection tool.
