Anthropic claims Opus 5.5 cuts task cost 40% — time to revisit shelved product ideas
krishnan · x · 2026-11-07
Krishnan argues a cheaper model can make previously bad product ideas worth testing again. Anthropic's Opus 5.5 release page reports 40% lower cost than Opus 5 on typical workloads at default settings: input and output token prices are each 20% lower, cache reads are 60% cheaper, and the model uses fewer tokens per task.
He cautions these are vendor-reported results, not guarantees for your application, but the distinction between token price and task cost matters: a workflow abandoned because it needed too much context or too many revision rounds may become viable if the model finishes in fewer steps — even if customers never notice which model powers it. His advice: before rewriting the roadmap, reopen the rejected-use-case folder, pick one workflow customers wanted but couldn't justify paying for, and run old vs. new systems side by side.
