Design engineer automates his own $56K/yr drafting job with an AI drawing tool
luisdans · x · 2026-11-07
A design engineer stopped drawing and built a tool that draws for him, eliminating the $56,000/year of drafting he used to bill clients. He didn't sell it or raise money — he just deleted the most billable part of his own job.
The workflow (built on Opus-class models reading his past drawing sets):
- LEARN: mines his historical sets for the unwritten rules he never documented
- DRAFT: generates the full drawing set from a brief against those rules, not templates
- CHECK: reviews each sheet for his own historically recurring errors — the part that changed his week, since it checks his mistakes, not a generic standard
His take: drafting was never the skill clients were buying, just the time tax attached to it. Attached article: GPT-6 Astra driving Blender to build a furnished, walkable house from one prompt, module by module.
