Autonomous shipbuilding robots place, fit and weld hull parts in one click, 5:35 per operation

Dustin Walper shared footage of his team's autonomous shipbuilding pipeline: from a 3D model, one click triggers robots to pick, place, tack, and weld hull parts end to end.
Key details:
- Parts are picked and placed to within 1/32" of nominal, with full contact and no fixtures
- Sweep and bow in the metal are corrected to within 1/16" tolerances before tacking
- Full weld sequences are completed automatically (double continuous 3/16" fillet with metal-cored wire in this case)
- In-process laser scanning QC on welds (not shown in the clip)
The real elapsed time is about 5:35 (video sped up) and expected to get faster. The author stresses optimizing cycle time across the entire process, not just welding — robotic steps replace multiple workers working far longer.
