Schmidhuber: Supersmart AIs will transform the galaxy in a few hundred thousand years
SchmidhuberAI · x · 2026-11-06
AI pioneer Jürgen Schmidhuber revisits an idea he has held since the 1970s: supersmart AIs will start by transforming the solar system via countless self-replicating, self-improving robot factories, then the entire 100,000-light-year-wide galaxy within a few hundred thousand years (interstellar travel being far easier for robots than humans), and eventually the whole reachable universe over tens of billions of years by traveling as radio signals. Full argument in Section 20 of his referenced paper.
