Ex-OpenAI policy lead: AI safety world overindexes on OpenAI and Anthropic

Miles Brundage, former OpenAI policy lead, argues the AI safety and policy world is overindexing on OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither has a big sustainable lead over others to begin with, and a slowing pace at the frontier — which looks increasingly likely — could level things even more.
He notes the only scenario where this focus makes sense is one where OAI and/or Anthropic essentially take over the world or shut down competition. Some people do want that, but in most normalish scenarios, other companies matter too.
