METR launches AI R&D acceleration assessment: are capabilities outrunning historical trends?
METR_Evals · x · 2026-11-06
METR published its assessment framework for "AI R&D acceleration" — the scenario where AI capabilities grow faster than the historical trend. The study tackles three questions:
- Is acceleration occurring, measured by the gap between internal and public frontiers?
- Is it attributable to AI itself rather than compute, data, or other inputs?
- Are there blockers to near-future growth?
The core concern: if AI automates AI R&D, capability growth could outpace what alignment and control methods can handle. METR proposes quantifying how much AI automation is accelerating internal capability growth. The accompanying chart illustrates the internal-vs-public frontier gap and the acceleration/bottleneck analysis.
