SOX plunges 12.2%, worst day since March 2020, as AI trade gets repriced

The PHLX Semiconductor Index fell 12.25% to 9,011, its worst day since the March 2020 COVID crash. The author reads it as the whole AI trade being repriced at once: weak Qualcomm and ARM prints, post-midterm data center curbs, a financing scare — all hitting a crowded trade while hedge funds were already deleveraging.
Demand-side evidence
- SK hynix has LTAs covering over half its 2027-28 capacity; Samsung says 2027 HBM supply is sold out at agreed target prices.
- Contracts aren't cancellation-proof, but demand hasn't suddenly vanished.
- Bloomberg reports Micron has all but halted work on a Taoyuan fab due 2028 — this week's fab news points to less future supply, not more.
Where bears have a real case: financing
- IREN says $6B of remaining FY27 funding is "subject to market conditions"; if credit shuts, deliveries can slip even with full supplier books, becoming a demand problem — likely similar at other neoclouds, worse if heavily levered.
Base case: 2027 demand intact; most positioning damage may be done; financing is the channel that can still bite. Watch funded delivery schedules and whether memory contracts convert to shipments; the demand debate belongs to 2028 (nfa).
