AI-run lab completes 11,000+ autonomous experiments; Claude parses 15B protein sequences

Two developments suggest AI-driven scientific research is arriving faster than expected:
- Nature paper on AutoDNA: a China-built AI-native autonomous biomolecular lab orchestrates 20+ instrument types across 11,000+ steps — DNA synthesis, transcription, amplification, sequencing — with humans only refilling reagents and maintaining hardware. It matched expert-optimized DNA synthesis yields, sped concurrent protocols 3.2x, completed an end-to-end DNA data storage cycle, and validated a clinically detected KRAS G13D mutation.
- Anthropic biology research: Claude helped discover and determine the first 3D structure of a prokaryotic vault particle, searching 15 billion protein sequences and doing the computational analysis.
The envisioned loop: AI proposes experiments, robots run them, instruments return results, AI interprets and iterates — once reliable enough, science without humans in the loop.
