Per The New York Times, "The Future of Truth" — a nonfiction book about AI's effect on truth — contained more than half a dozen fabricated or misattributed quotes generated by AI. Author Steven Rosenbaum acknowledged "a handful of improperly attributed or synthetic quotes" and launched his own investigation after the Times asked.
Rosenbaum disclosed he used ChatGPT and Claude during research, writing, and editing, saying the errors were accidental, taking full responsibility, and working with editors on fixes. The incident has also fueled debate over whether LLMs can reliably extract verbatim substrings from transcripts.
