India's TRAI recommends direct-to-device satellite service, a win for Starlink Direct to Cell
XFreeze · x · 2026-11-06
India's telecom regulator TRAI has recommended allowing direct-to-device (D2D) satellite service:
- D2D on L-band and S-band mobile satellite spectrum
- D2D on existing IMT bands: 600, 700, 800, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz
- Mobile operators can use their own spectrum by partnering with authorised satellite network providers
- No waiting for WRC-27 outcomes; handset makers encouraged to support the needed bands in future phones sold in India
This is exactly the model Starlink Direct to Cell runs on — satellites working with a carrier's own spectrum so ordinary phones connect where towers can't reach. With over a billion mobile users and huge uncovered areas, the author argues India is a massive opportunity for Starlink.
