Reasoning hurts pointwise reranking: EMNLP paper shows Rank1 underperforms
lintool · x · 2026-11-06
An EMNLP 2026 Findings paper asks whether reasoning improves pointwise rerankers — and finds it can hurt. Rank1, a reasoning reranker, generally underperforms Rank0 (same backbone, same training data, no reasoning); even replacing its reasoning with a fixed dummy sequence beats Rank1. Score analysis shows Rank1 assigns near-identical relevance scores once it deems a passage relevant, limiting discrimination. Code is open-sourced.
