Meta adds NTS (RFC 8915) to its public time service, ending 40 years of blind trust in NTP
Meta_Engineers · x · 2026-11-06
Since 1985, computers have asked the network for the time and simply believed the answer. Meta's public time service now speaks NTS (Network Time Security, RFC 8915): every packet is authenticated, so devices can verify the time genuinely came from Meta and wasn't modified in transit. The service is free, public, and open source, with a full technical write-up on the Meta Engineering Blog.
