CMU's ServerBench: coding agents design LLM serving systems at 4.87x vLLM value per GPU dollar

CMU and USC researchers released ServerBench (arXiv:2611.06841), a benchmark that asks coding agents to design complete, specialized LLM serving systems.
- Metric: latency-qualified token value per dollar of GPU cost, measured by replaying real coding sessions with dependencies intact, plus independent verification that the submitted system works.
- Results: across 11 coding-agent models and three deployments, 22 of 33 runs produced verified systems and 13 beat the strongest baseline. Claude Sonnet 5.5 built a serving system for Gemma E4B delivering 4.87x the value per GPU dollar of the vLLM reference (1×L40); 2.7x on Qwen3.5 9B (2×L40) at $97/run, while GPT 6.1 Sol achieved 1.8–2.6x gains at lower cost.
- Findings: top designs raised capacity and matched load to it; agents interpret performance feedback through workload-relevant experiments; reliable delivery requires verifying execution paths introduced by optimizations — failed runs often shipped optimizations that broke working paths.
Code and blog are open-sourced. The work hints coding agents will soon tune the entire stack, from prompts to token serving.
