Using JBang to Add Deterministic Java Guardrails to Your Coding Agent via Lifecycle Hooks
myfear3 · reddit · 2026-11-05
A developer shares a hands-on pattern for enforcing rules in coding agents (IBM Bob) with lifecycle hooks written as plain Java scripts via JBang.
The idea: agents mostly follow instructions, but rules like "don't touch these files" deserve deterministic enforcement. A hook receives the requested operation, checks the target path against protected paths, and returns exit code 2 to block it — no extra service or Maven project needed, and hooks can reuse the app's own language and libraries.
Caveat: hooks only intercept operations they actually see, so they complement rather than replace sandboxing, permissions, and CI checks.
