kimo: a 15MB CPU-only open-source video editor that AI agents drive entirely over MCP
LieTop7965 · reddit · 2026-11-05
College student naman open-sourced kimo, a GUI-free video editor where cut, trim, keyframe, captions, colour grade, tracking, particles, audio and export are all MCP tool calls. A single 15MB Rust binary runs CPU-only on a 2GB box, MIT licensed.
The reliable part is the render-a-frame loop: the agent makes a cut or caption, renders the frame at that timecode to check its own work, then commits to export. Tracking, colour grading and a simple particle layer work over MCP too.
Honest rough edges from testing across Codex, Cursor and OpenCode: long-timeline exports are slow on weak machines, the caption pipeline trips most clients on clips over a couple of minutes (timestamp alignment), particles/track have edge cases with fast motion, and mixed-resolution/framerate timeline schemas aren't polished.
