Australia warned of 'another robodebt' as report urges mandatory audit of government AI decisions

The Centre for Public Integrity has released a "Computer Says No" report warning that the Albanese government is "sleepwalking into another robodebt" due to a lack of transparency and legislation around automated decision-making (ADM) tools.
The report argues Australians may not know whether ADM was used in decisions affecting them, citing the government's integrated assessment tool (IAT) used to assess home support levels — previously criticised as unreasonable and unfair.
Among eight recommendations, it calls for:
- A mandatory audit and public register of all government ADM use
- An independent oversight body with powers to monitor, audit and investigate algorithmic decisions
Centre CEO Dr Catherine Williams urged urgent reform; the government has been accused of opacity over its use of algorithms in public decisions.
