Cherry Pi uses SQLite as substrate: apps, layers, and memory as single database files

sull · x · 2026-11-05

Redstar Systems highlights Cherry Pi's engineering design where every app is a single SQLite file (.pi format) containing code, assets, and data—openable, copyable, signable, and sendable. Apps are authored as folders (Lua manifest, SQL schema, handlers) and run in place unsigned, with a sandboxed empty environment rejecting function definitions and require calls. The workspace database holds desktop state, settings, trash, and grants; separate stores handle machine identity, pairing, and admin ledgers. The same format previously packaged portable agent apps.
