Claude engineer Addy Osmani's manual against 'cognitive surrender' to AI
xiaohu · x · 2026-11-04
Claude Code engineer Addy Osmani's long-form piece on judgment erosion in the AI era: the better models get, the less people look twice. His litmus test — "if you can't explain the answer even with an agent's help, you've surrendered ownership."
He breaks collaboration into three tiers: cognitive offloading (work delegated, accountability still yours), deferral (AI output becomes your next input, no longer a claim to verify), and cognitive surrender (AI output silently becomes your own idea). The slide is silent — you read closely once, skim next, then only scan skeletons, until someone asks why and you can't answer, having accrued invisible cognitive debt.
