Hackers Put Hundreds of French Supermarket Freezers into Defrost, Food Destroyed
shashib · x · 2026-11-04
Overnight Oct 11-12, attackers took over refrigeration controllers at hundreds of French supermarkets (Intermarché, Carrefour, etc.), pushing them into defrost mode — some cases hit 50°C/122°F, forcing mass disposal of fresh and frozen food.
- Danfoss said most affected units were older models without software/security updates.
- Claroty researchers disclosed the controller flaws on Aug 9 with fixes available; Shodan still tracked 4,500+ internet-reachable Danfoss devices on attack day — two months of public warning.
- Structural lesson: end-of-depreciation devices carry near-zero book value, so replacement requests stall in budget meetings. Aging edge devices belong on the CFO's desk.
