ShiftRAG bypasses RAG's textual bottleneck by feeding retrieval signals as soft tokens
_reachsumit · x · 2026-11-04
The arXiv paper ShiftRAG (Youmin Ko et al.) identifies a "textual bottleneck" in RAG: passing only raw text to the generator discards the retriever's discriminative signals, while unifying retrieval and generation in one LLM causes objective conflicts and worsens rank collapse in decoder-only architectures.
Method:
- A single LLM backbone with decoupled discriminative retrieval learning and autoregressive generation
- Retrieval alignment signals are projected into continuous soft tokens, a high-bandwidth interface that infuses the generator directly
- A soft orthogonality objective mitigates rank collapse; layer-wise relevance dynamics preserve fine-grained latent space
Results: significantly improves retrieval and QA over SOTA baselines while preserving backbone capabilities, with favorable efficiency-performance trade-offs. Paper and code are public.
