Microsoft details Outlook search overhaul: 7 relevance-ranked results and offline resilience
benjamingauthey · x · 2026-11-04
Microsoft's Outlook team published an engineering deep-dive on how search is changing across three fronts:
- Expanded relevance ranking: up to 7 relevance-ranked results now surface at the top before falling back to chronological order, using signals like recency, sender, and prior interactions.
- Resilience: better search behavior when connectivity is poor.
- Feedback loop: tighter connection between user-experience signals and engineering metrics to keep tuning ranking quality and the relevance/date boundary.
The post covers availability across Classic Outlook for Windows, web, new Outlook, and mobile, plus what's being tested next. The promo video was reportedly created with Copilot Video Agent.
