Inference Engine Explosion: llama.cpp Loyalist Can't Keep Up With New Frameworks
Kahvana · reddit · 2026-11-04
A Reddit user who started local LLM deployment in March 2025 notes how the inference engine landscape exploded: early on it was clearly llama.cpp, ollama, koboldcpp, vllm, exl3+tabbyapi, and litert — now Strata, Basalt, Maya, Colibri, Infernix and more appear faster than anyone can track.
Engines improve weekly, running huge models on 64GB RAM + 32GB VRAM, often at a quality cost. The author sticks with llama.cpp v0.8.0: e.g. Qwen Q4KXL at 15 t/s on dual RTX 5060 Ti 16GB (PCIe 5.0 x8x8 tensor parallel) plus 96GB DDR5-6000, with predictable quality. Asks the community what they use and whether the speed/quality tradeoff of new engines is worth it.
