Menlo Ventures' "2026: The State of Enterprise AI" report shows:
- Enterprise AI deployment spend jumped from $33B in 2025 to $177B by Sept-2026 — a 5.4x rise (vs. 3.9x the prior year), now equal to over 30% of public cloud revenue.
- Agents drove the jump: agent traffic on OpenRouter passed human traffic in Feb-2026, then grew 37x (vs. 5x for humans), reaching 80% of tokens.
- Customizing models remains a niche skill: only 10% of AI builders post-train (up from 6% in 2025), and 91% of those rely on outside partners — inference providers (50%), expert data/evals (41%), post-training vendors (30%) — with just 9% handling it entirely in-house.
