OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles 20% of Google's search query volume

OpenAI's consumer product lead for ChatGPT, Adam Fry, announced that the volume of search queries run through ChatGPT now equals 20% of Google's volume. OpenAI defines a "search" as any query that triggers an actual web search, excluding simple definitions or how-to explanations; Fry did not disclose the source of the Google figure.
For context, Bing held only 3% market share after a decade-plus of effort, per Satya Nadella's 2023 antitrust testimony. OpenAI likely leans on Microsoft Bing plus its own index for these searches.
