Open-source Project NOMAD packs Wikipedia and a local AI server for offline use
drdanielbender · x · 2026-11-04
Project NOMAD is a free, open-source offline knowledge and AI server that runs on any computer you already own. While online, it downloads Wikipedia, textbooks, Khan Academy courses, street-level maps, and AI models of your choice and keeps them updated; once unplugged, everything keeps working with no internet required.
- The optional AI assistant runs 100% locally — no cloud, nothing sent anywhere; you can skip AI and use only the knowledge library
- Aimed at emergency preparedness and off-grid living (cabin, RV, sailboat)
- Similar commercial products cost hundreds of dollars; NOMAD is free
