NVIDIA researcher cites OLMo Hybrid paper to challenge state-tracking research value

NVIDIA researcher Ahmad Hatamizadeh pushed back on X against Allen AI-related research, arguing it's well-known that Transformers can't state track, and that synthetic state-tracking performance has no bearing on language modeling ability—citing Allen AI's own OLMo Hybrid paper as prior evidence. J. Owen Petty defended the work, saying it provides a more complete theory of the "oil-water mixture" (architecture mixing), new proofs about where different models fall on that spectrum, and empirical validation of the theory.
