Ipsos study: AI ads fool 40% of viewers but still lose to human storytelling
petesena · x · 2026-11-04
Ipsos, with Syracuse's Newhouse school, showed 20 ads (half human, half AI) to 3,000 US consumers: "AI ads are good enough — and that's the problem." 40% couldn't tell which were AI, yet human ads outperformed by 14% short-term and 17% on brand equity; AI chose storytelling only 30% of the time vs. a 49% norm. Febreze and Herbal Essences problem-solution ads worked best as AI; a human Cheerios brief with a real human truth put both versions near the top of the database. Practical playbook: let AI make product spots and variations, keep humans on the story, and write one real human truth into the brief before anyone prompts.
