Google lets schools skip classroom AI tools — but only if they also give up Search
Ars Technica AI · rss · 2026-11-04
Google announced that schools using its education products will have AI tools disabled by default in the coming months, with administrators able to opt in manually.
The catch: the bundle includes Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search — there's no picking and choosing. Schools that reject classroom AI must also give up Google Search entirely.
Ars Technica calls it a Faustian bargain, noting that Chromebooks' ubiquity has made Google's education products dominant in schools, leaving administrators with a difficult either-or decision.
