Google will cut off Search for schools that reject AI, NYT reports

Per the New York Times, Google announced that starting early next year it will turn off AI tools in its K-12 education software unless administrators explicitly opt in — but schools that ban AI entirely will also lose student access to Google Search.
- "Search and AI are deeply integrated," said Chris Phillips, Google's VP for education; students at AI-banning schools will see a message that search is unavailable
- The move responds to educators and parents seeking more control over children's AI exposure, while Google's suite (Gmail, Docs, Classroom) and Chromebooks dominate US K-12 classrooms
- Critics see it as leverage: keeping Search now effectively requires accepting AI, raising concerns about abusing Google's education-market dominance
