Sentry CEO: engineers who can't do systems design will see salaries cut in half
zeeg · x · 2026-11-04
Sentry founder David Cramer pushed back on the 'skip fundamentals, rely on LLMs' wave: technical interviews will change, but the requirement to know systems design and software fundamentals isn't going away — 'if it does, everyone's salary is getting cut in half (or worse), because that's what we pay for.'
He mocked candidates who'd need '$100k of inference to build a registration form' as living in 'mass psychosis,' and explained his company's interview evals: working through a problem with a candidate yields signal even when they struggle — opting out signals both unwillingness to try and likely lack of required capabilities.
