Chetty's team shows digital twins recover causal effects, validated against RCTs

Economist Arpit Rai highlights a new paper by Chetty and the Opportunity Insights team: digital twins — rich ML applied to generate counterfactuals from many covariates — can recover causal effects. Crucially, they validate the approach against randomized controlled trials, enabling scalable program evaluation without running an RCT each time. Harvard economist James Parker calls it a big boost for synthetic control methods.
