Ex-Chrome engineering chief Addy Osmani warns of three new tech debts in the agent era

Addy Osmani, former Chrome engineering lead and now a core member of the Claude Code team, published an article on preserving critical thinking when agents generate code and solutions in parallel.
He highlights a counterintuitive dynamic: as models get stronger, low-level errors shrink and output looks fluent and mostly correct — which compresses human thinking time to seconds and lulls developers into complacency.
He argues agents are creating three new forms of technical debt:
- Cognitive Debt: massive output without matching accumulation of understanding
- Comprehension Debt: code runs fine, but developers increasingly don't grasp the internals
- Intent Debt: agents make product and design decisions whose original intent no one truly owns
His conclusion: when an agent can write a month's worth of a team's code in a day, the key skill is no longer coding speed, but being able to prove the code deserves to ship.
