How long must you record to fingerprint planes from audio? New heat map has answers
AndrewM_Webb · x · 2026-11-03
Andrew M. Webb quantifies the feasibility of identifying aircraft purely from microphone audio cross-referenced with public ADS-B data: you need contiguous audio long enough to capture at least two trackable planes. His heat map shows the average audio length required per location across the US and Europe — as little as 1-3 hours in dense corridors, 6-24 hours or more in many areas, and outright infeasible in plenty of places.
