NVIDIA's AgentBaton cuts agent API costs 65.9% via well-timed model handoffs
amaarora · x · 2026-11-03
NVIDIA Research introduces AgentBaton, studying how capable and efficient models can collaborate on long-horizon agentic tasks without fine-tuning either one.
- Key finding: efficient→capable handoffs underperform capable-only runs with little savings, while a single well-timed capable→efficient handoff preserves or improves accuracy at much lower cost.
- Method: a lightweight detector learns when to hand off from recurring task-progress patterns; the next model inherits the workspace via context or log files, and one detector works across model pairs.
- Results: across 11 model pairs, average API cost reduction of 65.9% with same or better accuracy.
- Paper: arXiv 2610.35959.
