Line counter loccount hit 803 languages — LLMs added 31 in two days, double the runner-up

esrtweet pushes back on "LLMs only produce slop" with his line-counting tool loccount: it now covers 803 languages/markups, more than double runner-up scc at 376.
The workflow matters more than hand-coding:
- Language knowledge lives in declarative YAML/JSON; the interpreter is generic, so adding a language means writing a quirks entry
- Point ChatGPT 6.0 Sol at the code tree, say "Add support for language Foobar", and it researches the syntax online and writes the entry
- He added 31 languages in two relaxed days, 10-15 minutes each; only the first 80 were done by hand
- An LLM-written Python script fetches competitors' repos and reports coverage comparisons, so he can instantly close any language gap
His takeaway: precisely because generating these checks became trivial, staying king of the coverage hill costs almost no effort.
