humans& (Ziang Li et al.) published a deep technical writeup on "GPU-accelerated Weight Teleportation," a lossless GPU compression pipeline for RL weight synchronization:
- Problem: in large-scale RL, trainer and sampler weights should match closely, but syncing terabytes of weights means either high-speed intra-cluster networking or blocking delays on samplers.
- Approach: building on delta weight sync, a co-designed Blackwell-native compression/decompression pipeline: massively parallel GPU compression with distributed ownership and fault tolerance, curated double compression with heterogeneous CPU-GPU decompression, and the Blackwell Decompression Engine with hardware-native algorithms.
- Result: better-than-intra-cluster sync speeds in most cases, without requiring samplers and trainers to be co-located.
- Also covers low-precision RL, overlapping DE and SM, fault tolerance, resuming from trained checkpoints, and inference deployment trade-offs.
Open sourced, aimed at speeding up research iterations.
