First look at Google Cloud Run standalone instances: SSH-able microVMs
rseroter · x · 2026-11-03
Wietse Venema publishes a hands-on first look at standalone Cloud Run instances (public preview), a fourth way to run containers on Google Cloud alongside services, jobs, and worker pools: a single lightweight microVM with its own lifecycle, SSH enabled by default, and an optional run.app URL.
The walkthrough covers three practical workflows: an on-demand Ubuntu dev box (dedicated least-privilege service account, sleep infinity with --no-default-url, connect over SSH), a persistent workspace backed by a Cloud Storage bucket, and a singleton web server for cases that need neither autoscaling nor HTTP-driven scaling. Regional availability, shared-CPU bursting, and pricing are also discussed.
