AI Agent Performs Brain Drug Injection on a Live Mouse

WIRED reports that Gabriel Ocana Santero, CEO of San Francisco biotech startup Exin Therapeutics, connected an AI agent to a custom surgical rig—motorized mouse immobilizer plus camera—and the agent successfully performed a gene-therapy brain injection on a live mouse.
Santero argues that models trained only on published literature miss failed experiments and real-time judgment calls, so wiring agents directly into lab equipment is the way to unlock their full value: a glimpse of AI as an active participant, not just an assistant, in laboratory research.
