Citing The Information, Ars Technica reports Apple is pushing ahead on household robots, with new CEO John Ternus driving development. The first product, code-named J595 and possibly branded HomeView Ultra, would autonomously roam the home, support FaceTime calls, and switch lights on when someone enters a room.
Key details:
- Targeted for 2027 at $1,000+, though delays could push it to 2028.
- Earliest prototypes date to 2018, approved to continue by then-CEO Tim Cook.
- Engineers are working to add capabilities beyond being "a fancy way to make FaceTime calls" to justify the price, after years of software refinement and incorporating more AI.
