Google's 'sleep' paradigm lets LLMs consolidate memories and self-modify for continual learning
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-11-03
Google Research published 'Language Models Need Sleep' (arXiv:2606.03979), a continual-learning paradigm with two stages: Knowledge Seeding, an upward distillation where a smaller self's short-term memories are distilled into the larger network, and Dreaming, a self-modifying process generating synthetic data for self-improvement while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Commenters see it as a key conceptual component of long-term continual learning — 'dreaming' centralizes easily in data centers and distillation to fresh small experts works on memory-constrained hardware.
