a16z Leads Tutor Intelligence Series B: Human Teleoperators Train Robots on Real Jobs

a16z announced it is leading Tutor Intelligence's Series B. Tutor inverts the usual robotics playbook: find a real use case first, deliver value with human teleoperators ("tutors"), then work backwards from deployment data to train robot foundation models — every robot at work makes the next one smarter and cheaper.
Key facts:
- Already deployed across major US manufacturing and logistics networks; over 1,000 robots under contract planned by end of 2027
- Nearly a third of customers receiving robots in the past 12 months were existing customers adding more
- Implementation as fast as 8 hours; hourly pricing shifts capex to opex, unlocking SMB and mid-market customers
- Two robots — single-arm Cassie (case picking, palletizing) and dual-arm Sonny (e-commerce fulfillment) — share one model across a vertically integrated stack
- Co-founders Josh Gruenstein and Alon Kosowsky met as MIT undergrads
