Zynga founder Mark Pincus distilled into 19 rules: instincts are right 95%, ideas only 25%

Aakash Gupta turned an hour with Zynga founder Mark Pincus into 19 rules of hit products. Pincus's mantra: your instinct is right 95% of the time, your idea is probably wrong — so keep the instinct and contain the idea.
Eight rules worth taping above a desk:
- Better is what 10/10 users pick. What you think is better is just "new."
- A download step loses 80% of users — from building Zynga Poker.
- Early in a platform shift (web, mobile, AI), ship less new.
- The problem with MVP is the word viable — it fills your head with hope; it must be solid enough that nobody can dispute what it taught you.
- Set the click-through bar before you look — a CTR move from 2% to 2.25% cuts CAC 30% (Pocket FM).
- Don't call your own idea better — Pincus ran the framework on his product Instinct live and left the Better column empty.
- Frameworks are a lens, never be dogmatic.
Gupta suggests running rule 17 on your roadmap: count items you called better that 10 of 10 users wouldn't pick.
