Instagram Live migrates from in-house RUSH to the IETF Media over QUIC standard
Meta_Engineers · x · 2026-11-02
Meta Engineering announced that Instagram Live ingest now runs on Media over QUIC (MoQ), the emerging IETF standard, on both iOS and Android. For nearly a decade, live video ran on RUSH, Meta's in-house QUIC-based protocol that proved QUIC could carry live media at scale — but evolving a transport alone is slower than evolving one at the IETF with Google, Akamai, Cisco, Cloudflare and academia.
The swap happened without disrupting production: an AMoQ publisher built on the open-source moxygen library and mvfst, an edge translation layer converting MoQ frames to RUSH framing so nothing downstream changed, and server-side routing so the ramp didn't depend on app-version adoption. The MoQ path matched RUSH across streaming-quality and reliability measures.
