Dev builds an MCP client as an iOS/macOS Shortcut, open-sources it
mhg3 · reddit · 2026-11-02
Reddit user mhg3 released MCP Toolkit, an Apple Shortcuts-based MCP client for iOS/macOS that discovers MCP tools at runtime and prompts you through calls.
How it works
- Paste an MCP server URL; the shortcut fetches the tool list and builds menus
- Pick a tool, fill fields, review the request before sending; view text/structured/raw responses
- Remembers named servers, caches tool definitions, saves calls with arguments; multiple saved calls can run in sequence into one combined report (results don't feed later calls)
Limits and caveats
- Built for MCP spec 2026-07-28, fully tested on macOS; iOS not rigorously validated
- Stateless HTTP + JSON only; no OAuth or streaming; complex inputs need raw JSON
- Saved arguments use global Shortcuts storage, so keep credentials out
The author generated it with their own Shortcutkit library (also on PyPI/npm) plus a coding agent; GitHub includes source and a build case study.
