Sakana AI held the "From World Models to Real-World AI" symposium in Tokyo on Oct 26 with 400+ attendees. Chief Scientific Advisor Jürgen Schmidhuber gave a keynote tracing world models from his 1990 work to today, in dialogue with CEO David Ha. Chief scientist Takuya Akiba unveiled the in-house LLM series "Sakana Sawara" (provisional), with the small Sawara Small slated for spring 2027. Schmidhuber argues generative AI realized only half of his vision—AI scientists and Physical AI remain unscaled, with openings outside big labs, including Japan.
