One night, zero hand-drawn letters: designer art-directs Claude to build a full Arabic typeface
aziz4ai · x · 2026-11-02
Saudi designer @aziz4ai ran an experiment: acting as art director of a type studio with Claude as the designer, he completed a full Arabic typeface "Najd" in one night without hand-drawing a single letter.
The result: 5 weights (300 Light–900 Black), matched Arabic + Latin glyphs (390 glyphs total), Latin harmonized on the same line as Arabic. The final version returns to classical type rules: one measurement unit for all proportions, diamond dots inspired by Najdi house ornamentation, identical loops and terminals, horizontal strokes thinner than verticals like a pen's trace.
His takeaway: AI executes and self-critiques, but taste and final decisions stay human — every typeface's last mile needs a calligrapher's eye.
