Astral founder: foundational open source projects could be supplanted by agent-built alternatives
charliermarsh · x · 2026-11-02
charliermarsh, founder of Astral and creator of uv, floats a "possibly psychotic" hypothesis: a foundational open source project could be replaced by an agent-developed alternative.
His reasoning: existing projects burn enormous time on process that solves problems which no longer matter for building better software, plus heavy social/coordination tax and resistance to change — frictions an agent-driven development model could bypass entirely. He admits he doesn't know where this leads for open source.
